Just what lies behind the lavish material culture of the Peranakan's? One has visions of elaborate rituals and the play of auspicious symbols and traditional practice in the typical Peranakan household, or for that matter any household. The overwhelming desire for homeliness, warmth and harmony may be the flipside of anxiety, fear and superstition. By separating the ornamentation from the framework and exploring the precise yet whimsical placement of home furnishing miniatures within domestic spaces, this piece explores the undercurrents beneath the facade of the home.
